Never Tried a Float? Here’s Why You Should Give It a Try

You’re probably thinking about it. So…what’s stopping you?

Maybe you've seen pictures of a float tank and thought, “That looks relaxing…but I don't know if I could do that.” Maybe you're wondering if you'll feel claustrophobic. Maybe you're worried you won't be able to turn your brain off. Maybe you're thinking, “Wait…I'm supposed to just lie there for an hour?” Or maybe you've simply never heard of float therapy before. Whatever your reason, you're not alone.

At The Mended Willow Float Spa in Seneca, PA, we hear questions like these all the time. And honestly, we love them—because once people understand what floating actually feels like, many of those worries disappear.

So let's talk about it.

"What exactly is float therapy?"

Float therapy is a simple concept with a pretty incredible feeling. You enter your private float room and step into warm water filled with a high concentration of Epsom salt. The salt makes the water extremely buoyant, allowing your body to float effortlessly.

No swimming

No balancing

No holding yourself up

Just floating

The water is maintained at approximately 94 degrees, which is skin temperature, helping create an environment where the usual sensations of hot, cold, pressure and gravity become much less noticeable. Then you get something most of us rarely experience anymore: Complete time to yourself.

No phone

No emails

No notifications

No errands

No one asking you what's for dinner

Just you, the water and an opportunity to slow down.

“But what if I’m claustrophobic?”

This is probably one of the biggest concerns we hear from first-time floaters and it's completely understandable.

The good news? You are always in control of your experience. First, our floatation therapy tank is an open room with no lid… designed specifically for those with a fear of small spaces. Secondly, the light and sounds in the room are at your fingertips during your float.

Want darkness? You control it.
Want light? You control it.
Want silence? You control it.
Want music? You guessed it. You control it.

You can ease into the experience at your own pace with no pressure. Your first float doesn't have to be about achieving some perfect state of meditation. It can simply be about getting comfortable. Once your body realizes that it is completely supported by the water, something interesting tends to happen: You stop thinking about floating... and start enjoying it.

“What if I can't shut my brain off?”

Here's a secret: You don't have to. Your first few minutes might be filled with thoughts.

Did I remember to send that email?
What am I making for dinner?
Why did I say that three years ago?
I really need to clean the garage.

That's normal. You're not doing floating wrong. For many people, the experience is less about forcing their mind to be completely quiet and more about finally giving their mind a place where it doesn't have to constantly react to the outside world. Eventually, you may notice your thoughts begin to slow down. Or you may simply enjoy an hour where nobody needs anything from you. Either way, that's a win.

“Is it really clean?"

An absolutely fair question. When you're floating in water, cleanliness matters. That's why proper water care, filtration and sanitation are such an important part of a quality float experience. Our float solution is filtered at least four times between each client through a process that includes:

Micron filtering

UV light sterilization

Ozone injection

Hospital grade dissenfectant

Our filters are cleaned and replaced weekly.  We require all floaters to fully shower prior to entering the tank to reduce any outside contaminants. Lastly, the large saturation of Epsom salts in the water acts as a natural disinfectant, inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

At The Mended Willow, maintaining a clean, comfortable environment isn't something we consider an extra—it is part of the experience we want every guest to have.

“What if I fall asleep?”

You might... and that's okay. The buoyancy of the saltwater supports your body, so you don't have to know how to swim in order to float. In fact, one of the most common things people discover during a float is just how easy it is to relax once they realize they don't have to hold themselves up.

You may meditate
You may think
You may daydream
You may fall asleep

Or you may spend the entire time wondering why you didn't try this sooner. There really is no wrong way to float.

“Is floating only for people who are into wellness?"

Nope.

You don't have to practice yoga. You don't have to meditate
You don't have to own a collection of crystals
You don't even have to consider yourself a “wellness person”

Floating is for busy parents. For people who work stressful jobs. For athletes. For people who spend all day on their feet. For people who spend all day at a desk. For anyone experiencing chronic pain.  For people who simply need an hour where nobody needs anything from them. You don't have to be good at relaxing to come float. That's kind of the point.

"So…what does floating actually feel like?"

That's the part that's difficult to explain until you've experienced it.

Imagine lying down without having to support the weight of your body

Imagine your muscles getting a break from gravity

Imagine being somewhere with almost no distractions

Imagine having an entire hour where your only responsibility is to relax

For many people, it's one of the most peaceful experiences they've ever had... and for others, it's simply an hour of uninterrupted “me time.”

Either way, you're giving yourself something that is increasingly difficult to find in everyday life: permission to unplug and reset.

You don't have to believe us.

That's our favorite part. You don't have to read ten articles about floating. You don't have to become an expert. You don't have to know what you're supposed to do once you get in. You don't even have to be convinced that floating is for you. Just come try it.

Give yourself one hour
Turn off the phone
Let the water hold you up

Take a breath and see what happens when you give your body and mind permission to turn off.

Your first float might surprise you.

And who knows? You might walk out of The Mended Willow thinking: "I had no idea I needed that.” We'd love to help you experience it for yourself.
